Choosing an Internet Method
Hello All!
I need to set up a computer that can be accessed by the internet. The connections do not need to be encrypted, but access to the information on the computer needs to be secure (password login). It will be being accessed by both Linux and Windows computers. The users will be using the computer as if it would be another directory on their computer.
Would running the computer (using Static IP) with Samba (with secure login) be the best approach?
FTP and remote login seems too combursome on the users. They are not computer literate and don't want all that mess.
Thank you very much,
Murdock

If they will access from outside (Internet), Samba is not an option. It won't work. Do they need a read-only access or read-write is required?

Also are you talking one or two using modem POTS dialup to your box ? Are you looking to start some sort of business with ten or twenty users later?
Need to consider bankwidth.

Thanks for the replies.
I will only be having a maximum of three people at one time accessing the system, so I am not worried too much about bandwidth.
However, they will need read-write access.
I am looking for something like PC anywhere, but have better security, closer to a vpn.
Also, why won't Samba work over the internet if it is IP based? Do providers close off those ports?
Any help is appreciated
Murdock

SMB is not secure and so I would not recommend it. Yes, some ISPs block those ports.
winSCP is a windows SSH FTP client application that is very easy to use. There are also lnux GUI ftp applications too.
