error occurs while installing sams

first i did

1) gunzip sams....tar.gz
2) tar -xvf sams.tar
3) cd sams
4) ./configure

after this i gt the message
saying gcc,c ,cc etc.. complier path not found in PATH variable

is there any other way to check the amount of data transfer and download from net.

Since squid is already installed there your packets are passing throught the squid box only. And as such you can use the sarg package. Squid Analysis Report Generator (sarg) is a tool that allow you to view "where" your users are going to on the Internet, to check downloads etc.
