Changing permissions of mounted folder of XP box

I have a folder of my XP box mounted by Linux across a crossover cable (I'm trying to share my Mozilla profile). It's set within Windows with no read-only settings. The mount gives full permissions to root and r-x to others, which I'm trying to change. The folloing happens (done as root):

Quote:
linux:/mnt/mozilla # chmod -vR a=rxw 5ed7zjn9.slt/

mode of `5ed7zjn9.slt/' changed to 0777 (rwxrwxrwx)
mode of `5ed7zjn9.slt//81867345.s' changed to 0777 (rwxrwxrwx)
mode of `5ed7zjn9.slt//abook.mab' changed to 0777 (rwxrwxrwx)

...
(...and so on, through all the files and directories)

However, the permissions don't get changed, as shown when I subesquently do the following:

Quote:
linux:/mnt/mozilla # ls -l

total 8
drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 4096 2004-05-28 00:41 .
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 96 2004-06-11 00:59 ..
drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 4096 2004-06-11 19:21 5ed7zjn9.slt

linux:/mnt/mozilla # cd 5ed7zjn9.slt/
linux:/mnt/mozilla/5ed7zjn9.slt # ls -l

total 7203
drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 4096 2004-06-11 19:21 .
drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 4096 2004-05-28 00:41 ..
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2226 2004-06-11 11:48 81867345.s
drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 4096 2004-06-11 19:22 Cache
drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 4096 2004-06-10 22:35 Cache.Trash
...
Any ideas what's happening?

chmod wont work because the file structure for vfat and linux file system is different.
Instead off that mount the XP partion with somthing like this
[/B]
/dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c vfat auto,user,rw,unhide 0 0
[/B]

in /etc/fstab
after editing do mount -a as root
