changing my ip

this is soooo embarrassing..... I have RH 7.2 on my laptop and its works great for accessing the Internet through the network, but, I want to be able to ping other computers and other stuff.
I have looked (in the wrong places no doubt) and cant find any where that tells me how to change my ip so i can be on the same network as the other computers.
I cant even find out how to set it to dhcp.
I really do have a brain.... I just had it out playing with it the other night.

thanx for all the help.
jt

You need to change IP assigned to your NIC (or one of your NICs, or...), not to your machine (it may have many IPs). To change your IP to a static one, you use 'ifconfig'. It looks like this:
ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.4
It changes the IP of first NIC to 192.168.1.4.
