Question centralised emails

Hello,

I would like to centrise my emails so that one computer downloads all the different accounts (bt, talk21 and hotmail etc)and stores them, and all my other computers, both windows and linux view them from central store, and if possible share the same sent items directory. It doesn't matter if all the emails that I send come from the same email address, infact this would be an advantage as I would like to get rid of a few accounts.

Would it be as simple as having a shared email directory structure and something like thunderbird? Or could I do something fancy like an IMAP server. I not sure if an IMAP system would be able to download email from a couple of different email accounts.

Many Thanks
