What is the message? There is few possiblity, either unknown host, certificate, firewall, tcp wrapper, wrong username/password and etc can cause u not able to log in. Please provide us the error msg.

ps -ef|grep ssh: shows sshd running

When I try to ssh to another machine :ssh -l user machine1
There's no reply....it just remains waiting....there's no error returned.
Pinging from machine1 to debian machine and vice versa works.

Try "ssh user@localhost" to check if ssh is working.

Make sure port 22 is allowed from the remote machine.

Check /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny.

using ethereal to check the communication between your pc and the ssh server. Tell us during 3 way handshake and reply from the server.
