I have a redhat9 box and a winxp notebook. Yesterday I reinstalled win and now i cant see my linux box in network places. I ran ping command on both machines and both were able to send packets to the other. before reinstalling windows all was well.
I have set the ip address and the workgroup and the name.
One possibility I can think of is Windows xp has a default workgroup of either WORKGROUP or MSHOME once it's installed, try changing the workgroup to the same workgroup as the redhat box and see if you can then see it under network neighborhood.
Is there a firewall running on the windoze box, i.e service pack2 has the new windows firewall that causes all sorts of headaches. If there is a firewall running wether it's a windows or something like zonealarm, I would suggest turning it off temporarily and seeing if that maybe causing a problem.
Yeah not a bad howto for someone new to linux. Windoze network neighborhood is not too relaiable at the best of times. If your still having trouble seeing the linux box in windoze but still can ping it, you can mount the drive on the windoze box by going to START --> RUN and then type in the run box:
net use j: \\serverip\sharename
That will mount the samba share under my computer and then you should be able to access the share from there. And windoze the next time you bootup will mount the share again for you.
