Question cant resolv dns with Libranet ( Debian based)

OS: Libranet ( debian bases distro ), and Windows XP Pro
NIC: 3com Gigabit LOM 3c940
mobo: Asus p4c900 Deluxe

What I can't do:

I can't seen to resolv any hostnames. ( via browser, host, or ping )

What I have done:

1. All other computers can assess internet just fine, Including this one but only when booted to XP

2. I can ping any host (internal or external to my network) by IP address

3. I have checked /etc/resolv.conf and verified the settings

4. I have used both my ISP's DNS server, and my local server

5. I have tried to use the host command to query both servers with no luck. ie. host yahoo.com 192.168.1.3 (my local DNS server)

6. I installed the Drivers from Asus's website

7. Lastly I removed iptabes alltogether jsut to be sure there was no firewall

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

RJ

Are you using dhcp or static address.

DNS cont....

I'm using DHCP which is working fine, but I also tried it with a static address.

But, I have since reformatted and install Debian 3.1 and everything seems to be working fine.

I would still like and suggestions as to what the problem might have been, since I would prefer to use Libranet.

Thanks again,
RJ

I know you've reformatted but it would have been nice to know what 'ifconfig' showed, and any output from 'traceroute' to see where you're packets were going. Also maybe the output from ethereal while you were trying to resolve a host name. If you couldn't ping any host (on your LAN and the net) then you obivously wouldn't have had your DNS setting configured correctly, or your router wasn't configured to act as a DNS server. Chances are though your problem was that you didn't have your router's IP address set as the default gateway. - Just my two cents.

well from what I remember, ifconfig showed the correct address and no dropped packets. Traceroute worked fine so long as used the destinations IP ( I was able to ping anything int./ext. by IP only ). I confirmed the default gateway with route. The only thing that didn't work was name resolution. As for Ethereal, honestly I didn't even think of that.

now that I'm reminising about the whole ordeal, the one thing I remember that struck me as wierd was that the Loopback adapter had no routeing entries. ( oh well, too late now )

Thanks for the two cents, they are always beter than none.
