cant get samba to work

Ok, I am trying to network linux and windows.

I followed the steps that the help file gives for samba.

from windows I can see linux server, but cannot view the shared folder. it says, "localhost not accessible"

I cannot see any the windows network from linux.

here is my smb.conf file:
http://webzoom.freewebs.com/2ndrangersairsoft/smb.conf

I use linux as a personal computer, its not part of a business, and I want to be able to share files with windows machines without them having to enter passwords everytime they want to get a file off the linux machine.

what do I do???

Fedora installer assigns localhost as the default hostname of the computer and samba by default uses the hostname. However, every TCP/IP computer uses locahost to define the network loopback device (127.0.0.1) and so the connection fails. Add a line in the global section of the smb.conf file

net biosname = myserver (or anything else you want to call it)

Be sure to restart samba for the changes to take effect.

Also, be careful when accepting windows errors. I've had many occaisions when windows reports a network resource as unavailable when they are really there. The best way i have found to double-check is to go to where windows gives you the option to 'view computers near me' . That usually finds everything...

ok, I can get into the linux shared file from windows, but I still cant see the windows machines.

when I go to computer:/// I click on "network" then I click on "windows network" and that opens smb:///

and it doesnt show anything.

is there another way to see windows machines that are on the network and get files from them?
