Cant connect to the internet through LAN

when i run the network wizard i set it to auto IP (as in windows) and when it say "Network must be restarted", it hangs for about 2 mins and then says finshed, will now apply changes.

i click on Apply or OK it then hangs for another 2 mins, i start up Konquerer and it cant connect :(

my housemate can get it to work running through the same LAN.

but he has a different NIC.

i tried modprobe, insmod, lsmod etc and it detects the card fine (SIS900).

i have no idea why i cant connect to the net.

sorry

using Mandrake 9.0

im running through a server computer which has an ADSL connection.

in Windows i would just assign an automatic IP and it will connect to the net.

right i tried Mandrake in VMware under windows and now the internet works.

what does this mean ? does it mean windows is taking control of networking therefore it works and it doesnt matter if MAndrake supports my NIC or not.

or

When i run a native Mandrake, it has problems getting an IP for me from the server ?

I Activated me eth0 with IP and DNS and mask .

But When I open the internet Netscape doesn't work ..
When I activate kppp statistics Linux doesn't send any packets on the modem .

When I activate 2 tcpdump terminals all internet packets are transfered through eth0 interface not modem .

Every time I ask for a webpage Linux starts searching my network if it doesn't find it . Linux is supposed to send packets to modem ??????? or my default Gateway which is the ISP's(router)
but that doesn't happen and something is missing I don't know what !

sorry Penguinizer, cant help :(

hmm i just looked at my hardware list and if i run it under VMware my network card is going through some sort of emulation so its not actually using the Sis900 driver. Well at least i know its not my network card, but more the support for it.
