cannot reach internet from private LAN

I am running Slack10.2 and WinXP on the same box and my ISP delivers internet on a local LAN 172.16.1.0. Until recently my box was assigned a private address like 172.16.1.7 and I was logging onto the local LAN via pptp and eth0 and was able to reach internet from both - WinXP and Linux.
But some days ago I asked my ISP to assign to my box a routable address and he did - 213.145.112.41
Since then I cannot reach beyond the gateway of the Lan and cannot ping anything in the internet or even in the local LAN from Linux but I still have internet from WinXP.

The termination of the script is done normally by the user.
I am missing something but what is it and how can I fix it?
Is there something to do with the addresses been from different domains?
Why WinXP is reaching internet and Linux does not?

You have several problems here. You are obviously trying to use static ips which is fine.
1 Your dns address is wrong on your xp box for you lan. It is in the wrong subnet. eg current dns address is
10.10.0.1 and should be 10.10.3.1

2 The static ip for your linux box for etho0 is set to the same as your xp box (they must be dirrerent). eg xp is currently set to 10.10.3.7 and linux is also 10.10.3.7. Change linux to 10.10.3.8.

3 Add a DNS entry to your linux box 10.10.3.1 (10.10.3.1 is obviously your router and doing dns lookups)

4 When you dial your isp from your linux box it is much easier to allow your isp to assign ip addresses. (dynamic) rather than trying to set them yourself (static).

5 Do you have a seperate router or is one of your pc,s routing

Here is what happens really:

On count 1. I agree that WinXp is using the wrong dns address and that it is in the wrong subnet but nethertheless it compansates for this somehow because it is working (there is connection to the internet when in WinXP).

On count 2. I think that it may not be exactly a DNS problem because I dont get response from beyond the gateway , not even if pinging in quad decimal number.

On count 3.I did as you advised but to no avail, still no response when working in Linux

On count 4.The addresses are assigned DHCP from the peer but maybe I did not put it clear enough - I am working from a single host with two systems on it - WinXP and Linux.When in WinXP it is OK but when in Linux there is no internet. My connection to the internet is through eth0 and a local LAN with private addresses 172.16.1.0 . The problem is that my ISP's peer assigns to my computer a real internet address 213.145.112.41 but assigns itself a private address 172.16.1.2 and this messes things up for Linux, while WinXP manages somehow inthis situation.

Will appreciate any ideas...

Sorry, didnt realise you were dual booting. Please explain how your lan is set up. Is your host connected to a seperate router. I have to assume this because you keep talking about a local lan. If it is a local lan, you are telling me that you have a network set up in your house/office with more than 1 computer and/or a router. Please explain fully.

I now realise I didn't explain it right.

The setup is simple . I have one box at home and a LAN cable comes to it from my ISP.
The ISP operates in town and supplies internet over LAN to a lot of other people as well.
I am connected to one of his servers on this LAN.

BOOTING LINUX
When I start my box , it is only the eth0 interface from my side that is initialized and I recieve an address that is 10.10.3.7 and network mask 255.255.255.0 and the adress of the ISP's server side is 10.10.3.1
There also is a default route 10.10.3.1

At this point I still do not have access to the internet . Then I have to start a pptp connection as a result of which a ppp0 comes up with an IP address for my side of the line 213.145.112.41 and !!! the poin-to-point address of the peer 172.16.1.2 !!! which is what baffles me! and the default gateway changes to 0.0.0.0 ( also destination is 0.0.0.0 and genmask 0.0.0.0) .

From this moment on I don't know what to do ! I cannot ping anything except the peer i.e. 10.10.3.1 on eth0 and 172.16.1.2 on ppp0 . the DNS server is set by the peer to 213.145.112.2 but I cannot ping it as well.

NOW BOOTING WINXP
I recieve my address 10.10.3.7 and the address of the ISP's server 10.10.3.1 and the default gateway to 10.10.3.1

Then start VPN and the routing becomes as given in the fist posting.

And the access to the Internet is OK!

So what might be it?

Forgot about the ISP's server.

It is running Linux as well 2.4.x

Pptp is used probably because the majority of the users on this LAN are operation Windows.

By way of interest I would like to see the physical connection from your isp. It is obviously different technology to ours.

Forget about your pptp for the time being and get your eth0 working 1st.
If you are setting your ip statically you must have the following set or it wont work.(regardless of xp is doing)
1 ip address (213.145.112.41)
2 Subnet mask
3 Default Gateway
4 Dns server
Get these details from your isp. Please do this and try and connect then give me ifconfig.

If you choose dynamic settings, your isp will provide all these for you and you should be able to
connect immediately.
