cannot ping linux server by dns

I built a Fedora Core 4 box inside a corporate LAN. Resolve.conf has the ip's of the DNS servers. So, I can ping locally and on the Internet by dns and IP's. However, I cannot ping the linux box by name, only by IP. A hostname command gives computer name as ..eg..."sample.domain.net" and dnsdomainname lists "domain.net". Any ideas?

Do you have a local dns? -- If you do, then you will need to point resolve.config towards it and make sure that it is set up correctly. Use dig to check the set up.

If not then you need to go to your /etc/hosts file and tell your O.S. to resolve the IP address correctly. The file ususally has instructions. If you are in windows-- find>> LMHOSTS -- again edit accordingly.
