these are the steps I take with samba
edit smb.conf

create an samba password file with the command ...

cat /etc/passwd | /usr/bin/ > /etc/samba/smbpasswd

then I add the username and password for my linux/windows account holder with
the command smbpasswd -a user_name <return>
you will be prompted for the password!!!

then start samba as stated above ..

then voila it works?!

SWAT is a web based interface for configuring samba.Never tried it but it is an option 4 u.
