This is the one if you want to make it from source.
Good luck!

Thanks! This will enable me to connect to my router with WPA encryption protocols? Right now, I'm able to connect so long as the access point is unprotected. I don't want to do anything that would keep me from connecting at all so I want to be really careful here.

The DMESG was the key, or at least, one key in my adventure. Told me:
[ 24.137153] b43-phy0 ERROR: You must go to http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/...devicefirmware and download the correct firmware for this driver version. Please carefully read all instructions on this website.
Methinks I'm getting closer...

Mine is an Acer Aspire 3610 with a RealTek wired LAN and a Broadcomm BCM4318 for wireless. Booted into Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook Remix. Now, to restart (so much nicer and faster in Linux) and see what DMESG tells me after.

I am getting closer, but it is still reporting (in dmesg):

I've done the IFCONFIG using SUDO, and it didn't report any errors, but I get stymied when I get in the <>SYSTEM->Network Connections and go to WIRELESS. The WLAN0 doesn't show up unless I add it, and then it asks for SSID, MAC and BSSID. Just what does it want for these things? I have all of the H/W addresses and MAC addresses for the PC's and the wireless router already recorded, as well as the WEP key. But, I get to this edit stage and am lost as to what it wants. So, a little edification would be much appreciated.

BTW, this is an Aspire with a failing 40GB HDD, soon to be replaced with a 60-80 GB HDD and made dual-bootable into Win 7 and Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook.
