I get the error that I don't have a default subnet, but I see no way to create one.

How are you trying to "create one"?
What have you done, exactly?

I found a tutorial on how to create a vpc from scratch and it works now. I deleted stuff I thought was not needed and could no longer create ec2. it would say no default subnet. the default vpc is unusable, but the new one I created works. I have no idea what I deleted to ruin default vpc.
