Cannot Connect To Network (Wan or Lan)

So after much help from people here i have got myself up and running on linux, with a raid drive and the works,

All is going well and im enjoying the change from windows, apart from one small issue... I cant get any network activity.

The little connection icon up in the corner seems to think i am connected to auto eth0 just fine, but nothing seems to work.

If i bring up eth0's connection properties, its telling me it is connected toe the Primary DNS address of 192.168.2.1, the default rout is the same,

But on my windows box on the same network the DNS is 192.168.0.1, So i am assuming this is the problem? But getting the DNS to change in linux has proven no easy feat for a amateur myself,

Would love to post some logs to help narrow down the issue but no idea with what logs to start with?

Any help please team?

Edit: Almost forgot, running xubuntu 9.3 i think?

Try setting your network settings manually in
Code:
/etc/network/interfaces
That should sort out your problems. Take a look at this: http://codesnippets.joyent.com/posts/show/319

The default for most "home" networks is to use 192.168.*.* (where the * is a value between 0 and 255) for it's addresses. Almost all connections to the Internet (again, for "home" networks) reserve 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.0 as the "gateway" and "DNS" address. So your "properties" information should, probably, look somewhat like the attached screen shot. (Note that that display is from the "properties" tab in the wicd pop-up. Other network managers will display the same information, but the formats may differ.)

One thing to keep in mind: Those addresses are used for "home" networks because they are one of three "non-routable" address groups. That means that they will not pass through a network switch. So, if you have a switch (sometimes called a "router") between your computer and you device connecting to the Internet, your connection should be blocked at the switch. If this is the case, try bypassing the switch and connecting directly to the device (often called a "modem") connecting you to the Internet.

When i tried to save my changes i got "can't open file to write"

All that was origonally in the file was

Code:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

PTrenholme

My current network is slightly messy, i have my adsl modem, plugged into a switch, which then goes into a main board in my apartment, "hard-wiring" my apartment, and then from the phone jack on the wall i have it going into another switch which breaks into 3 computers,

While windows tends to ignore the last switch, and doesn't see it as part of the network, perhaps linux sees it? and is trying to use it as its default gateway?
