Hi there, new boy on the linux block has a problem with connecting to the internet via my Sagem F@st 800 E3 USB modem.

When I look at the bootup screen in detail I get the following message just before the "Failed"

"Couldn't get channel number:Input/Output error using interface ppp0
Connect: ppp0 <-->/dev/pts/0
anon warn [pptp_gre.c:95]
connect: Network is unreachable
anon fatal [main pptp.c:251]:Cannot bind GRE socket, aborting
modem hangup
Connection terminated"

I am running a dual boot with XP and the modem works fine so USB and modem are ok

I am running Mandrake 10.1 and kernal 2.6.8.1 with KDE 3.2

Any ideas ?

You will need the driver for the modem which I believe are at;

Read the documentation carefully. Linux generally doesn't get on well with usb and prefers ethernet.

eventually got modem up and working thanks to great info, and much patience from eagle usb forum..
