cannot activate network device

G'day cobbers,

I have just shouted myself an adsl connection rather than dial-up. I'm using a D-Link modem (DSL-302G) and have it connected to my computer via a network cable rather than USB.

It all works beautifully as long as I remember to turn the modem on before I boot Linux. However, if I'm already in Linux (RH9) then I cannot activate the network device. I am using Network Device Control (redhat-config-network 1.2.0) to try to activate, but the message "cannot activate network device etho0" is returned. I get the same as root user.

Am I using the wrong tool to try to activate the network? Do I need to configure something to enable activation after bootup?

Thanks in advance for your help.

What could be happenning is that when you keep the cable modem on, Linux is able to get the DHCP address from the ISP.

when you keep the modem switched off at startup, Linux is unable to get an IP Address.

You can try

#/sbin/service network restart

after switching the modem on.

Wow, quick replies! Thanks all !

Hold your horses though. It all seems to be working now (although I've tried many times before without success). For some reason it all appears sweet now and what I've tried before in vain now seems to be fine.

Sorry if I inconvenience anyone.

I have the same problem.
i do not know what to configuer and how.
I have installed Linux RedHat-9 and I an using the ADSL broadband for windows XP ( I am using a D-link Modem), I want to setup the internet connection for Linux but I cannot as I have found that this modem Model No. DSL-302G, has no drivers for Linux.
Please guide me what should I do. I really feel so handicapped for not able to get internet on Linux.
Thanx For you patience and time.
Regards
Harbir

harbir,
If you use the ethernet port then no special modem drivers are required. Use the RH network GUI to configure an ADSL connection.

harbir,

What michaelk said worked for me. Forget the USB stuff (even for WinXP) and plug the ethernet cable in. From there all should be sweet without any installation of drivers etc. Get back to us and let us know how it goes. :)
