thats the thread I started a while ago if anyone wants to read it. But I Installed Mandrake 9.2 and I can't get it to run with my cable modem directly, or through the router its plugged into. It runs fine in XP but just doesn't like to connect in Linux. Any ideas?

/network didn't put out anything, and the later one didn't exist, or at least it couldn't find it.
I turned off the Iptables, and tried the service network restart, it tried to bring up the eth0 and it failed to do so again.
The router is a cheap compusa brand....lol hope that's not the problem, cost a total of 20 bucks and I don't want to buy another one just to use linux. But even when I connected it directly to the cable modem it won't connect.
First off I goofed on the second file it should be:
cat /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
NETWORK=192.168.8.0
BROADCAST=192.168.8.255
ONBOOT=yes
MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=yes
I don't think it's your router. Since network is failing to bring up eth0 I think you have a problem with the ifcfg-eth0 script. Or possibly a problem with the module 8139too.
Try copy and paste the ifcfg-eth0 file and the network file here and maybe someone can figure out the problem. Also verify that 8139too module is loading.
thats all it put out, found it out that it didnt have the things yours did. I tried assigning the gateway,mask, and ip. But still nothing happened. How would I go about verifying 8139 is actually loading and working correctly.
Try lsmod, that will show you which modules are loading.
Also look in /etc/modules.conf and post anything you have related to 8139too. You should have a line something like this:
alias eth0 8139too
And try one more time to post the file /etc/sysconfig/network. If you don't have one then make one. You can use the one I posted earlier, just change the hostname unless your hostname is spongebob.
