Can see Linux box on LAN by IP address but not name

Title says it all ...
Cast of characters:
VENTRIS, a Win 8 machine, fully network aware.
ATTICUS, running Fedora 14 on old hardware, newly installed and booted.
Router/gateway, unnamed.
DHCP server. Provided by ISP (?), accessible through gateway.

Both machines can load web pages. Both can ping remote hosts by IP or hostname. Each can ping the other by IP address.

Neither can ping each other by name. 'ping ventris' from atticus returns 'Unknown host name' and vice versa.

What do I need to do? All I want to do is open a putty window on Ventris to manage Atticus remotely.

You need to either set up a DNS server or manually add the hostname/ip in the hosts file

Don't I need to reset something to flush out old settings?
