can ping just about anything but no http traffic
 

Hi you awesome Linux community. Ok I am officially asking for help! So like my subject implies when running linux I can ping google.com, yahoo.com, etc. and get a reply. No problems there. As soon as I open a browser (tried firefox, epiphany, konqueror) and try to go anywhere (google.com, linuxquestions.org) I usually/eventually get an error equivalent to "your request timed out"... ya know...the website couldn't be found kind of thing.

Ok so let me briefly describe my set up:

I get my internet access via ADSL (Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line...yeah I know I probably don't need to spell that out...but anyway). The ADSL Modem is made by "Paradyne" and its Model # is 6381-A3-200-0GR if that helps at all. The Serial # (for the DSL Modem) is 6438015.

Ok so behind my DSL modem is a Belkin 54-G Wireless Router with 4 10/100 Ethernet ports on it. It doesn't matter if I try to connect via one of the ethernet ports or the wireless ... I can ping like described above but no browser/http traffic/activity what-so-ever! =(...... Its making me pretty sad here guys... I just want to be able to use apache to serve up a site or whatever...ya know?!? Ok also let me say that I also have windows on two of my PCs and they have perfect access to the internet no problem (one Dekstop connected via an ethernet port and one laptop connected via the wireless).

Now I've also tried completely uninstalling (I think I got everything) iptables and any firewall software in linux and still no successful browsing. I think I had partial success using Ubuntu but I find Debian kind of confusing from a core system kind of way since they deviate from the traditional linux system. Anyway...thats probably for a different forum/thread.

Also let me say that I had a Satellite Internet connection before moving and getting this DSL connection and used the same router behind the Satellite Modem/router and I was able to succesfully connect to the internet in linux...no problem. So I don't get it!!!!! If someone even remotely has an idea of what I can try in linux please let me know!!! I'm relatively proficient when it comes to linux so don't be afraid to throw terms and commands at me! =D Guys thank you so much in advance of any help you can offer! Its been a while since I've utilized and visited LinuxQuestions.org but I am so glad that this site exists! I wish I was more involved honestly. I hope my detailed post is as helpful as possible and appreciated.

First I would make sure the Belkin 54-G Wireless Router has the right dns server information.

dns is a funky non-routable IP because my DSL IP is dynamic....
 

So yeah my DNS address is 10.0.0.2 and if I remember right that is not internet routable right? So that means that my ISP has me on their network behind firewalls and switches, etc... right? So I figure thats all well and good.

But I am just trying to DHCP my ip in linux from the belkin router and it gets it and I can ping using "google.com" and it shows me googles IP when I get the reply...so yeah I don't know. Has anyone else out there dealt with something like this? I guess what I'll try doing is connecting linux directly to the DSL modem and using the "real" DNS and Default Gateway (10.0.0.2) which I kind of tried before.

While you are connected directly to the modem if everything works ok post;
ifconfig
route -n
cat /etc/resolv.conf
then do the same after you hook up the router

will try the two connection configs

So I actually managed to make it here in linux. The only way I can actually get to any website is by first using ping to get the actual IP address of (for example) www.linuxquestions.org. When the browser (I'm using firefox) starts to load the site it takes a long, long time. Some sites take longer than others. For example I can actually navigate to different sections of linuxquestions.org but I tried to load www.gamespy.com and yeah its definitely still loading...pretty much text so far and we're going on like 8 or 10 minutes or more. I've also tried to sign on to aim using gaim (of course :) ) and yeah that just sits there with the "status bar" going no where and sometimes eventually says that it couldn't connect.

I'm having the exact same problem. I can ping machines both internal and external to the network, but when I try to download a website it is SLOW. As you indicated, on the order of 15 minutes for something simple. Unfortunately I don't have a solution for you, but I'll keep my eye on this thread and if I come up with something I will let you know. In the mean time, here is the results from my setup, maybe you can spot something similar to you that might be both our problems. I'm currently connecting to a linksys 802.11b router through a little wusb54g wireless access point. Here is what I'm showing:

As you can see, its so slow I sometimes just get a timeout, but every once in a while I'll get a page to load, I'll be it after an insanely long time.
