Can Ping, can traceroute but cannot browse certain websites such as facebook / twitte

I am using Kali Linux and connected to the internet through a CPE Modem / router using the ppp0e settings from my ISP. All was working fine until last week when certain websites lsuch as facebook, twitter, linkin and some other random websites will simply not load.

So taking facebook as a case study I started by pinging facebook and i did get a reply. i tried traceroute and there is no problem. Then I tried browing with a perl text broswer and guess what - it works (not for facebook only but for the other sites that won't load)

I am really confused and have been reading articles after articles for 1 week now and nothing seems to work. please help

Thanks

NB I just want to add that filezilla does not connect to any of my remote servers so too is empathy internet messenger will not connect to facebook but will conncet to yahoo.

could be needing https instead of http

I know that many websites are now using https has there main web connection protocol. I know for sure that Facebook, yahoo and linkin are all using https now instead of http...I would believe it should change to https automatically BUT I'm not sure about that.

Just my try at giving back to the forum. Good luck!
J.

Which browser are you using? You just keep saying "browser" which is not very descriptive considering the amount of browsers available. Try running your browser in a safe-mode with all add-ons disabled. Disable all of your plugins. If it works in that state then work on re-enabling the features/add-ons one by one until you find the source of the problem.

I was able to fix this with the help of alot of tutorials read here and there. the problem was because my MTU was set to 1500 instead of 1400 (which is the limit)

I solved it by runnin the following in a terminal:

/sbin/ifconfig ppp0 mtu 1400

Thanks everyone for your help and care.

Just a note.

Isn't it more than 1400? I forget something like 1428 or 1478. Use ping to see where it fails and splits as I recall to find limit. It won't matter much at 1400 however.
