can not resolve domains anymore

Using Ubuntu 17.10 on a home made desktop computer. This setup has been working for at least 5 years. I also have Windows 7 on this computer and I have no problems with the internet connections. I have a newer home made computer with Ubuntu & Windows 7 on it. No problems with the newer computer.

I can ping 8.8.8.8 & it works. But if I ping www.google.com I get Name or Service not found. I can not connect to any server. Any ideas?

Poor old /etc/resolv.conf has been 'improved' to DEATH.

>"ping #.#.#.# works"
Spot-on perfect troubleshooting!!!
Welcome back to posting after 3-6yr absence

systemd has 'improved' simple old resolv.conf Here's from DDGoo:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/9655...e-dns-settings
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread....2374857&page=2
https://askubuntu.com/questions/9668...17-04-to-17-10

Please let us &future searchers know what broke & what fixes your case!!!

I also encounter this 'new feature'; might it be malware from the 'never-systemd' movement???

You might need to add your DNS server to your /etc/resolv.conf file.

Here's mine for reference:

Code:
#nameserver 8.8.8.8
nameserver 192.168.43.1
Good luck!

Isn't Ubuntu's /etc/resolv.conf just a symlink? (ls -l it)
Is vi /run/... 'persistent'?

Why? What ?default choice? is wrong, for a 'typical "end" user'?
