Unhappy Can not connect to LAN

I try to connect my new linux machine to the network, I have a static IP address. I followed the RedHap doc, use the "setup" command , and select "Network configuration" to fill in the IP, network mask, default gateway, Primary nameserver. But I can not ping other PCs running windows 2000 on the network. My questions are:
1. Is the Primary nameserver the same as the preferred DNS server, which is used to setup the LAN in windows 2000?
2. use "ifconfig", I can see the IP address is correct. But I can not find the default gateway and DNS. Anyone know the command?

Thanks a lot!
