can connect to my ftp from any computer EXCEPT my own


whats going on?
connecting to localhost:21or 192.168.1.101:21 works, but when i type in my external ip i get this error/disconnect:

Disconnecting from site [my external ip adress]
although using localhost works fine, i would like to be able to connect to my ftp from my computer using my external ip to test some security features i am trying. anyone know how i could do this?

Two options ... One is use "active" transfer mode (which may or may not work depending on the firewalls on either end) by typing "pass" or "passv" or some other variation (type help ... It'll be in there) and the other is configure your FTP server to solicit new connections on it's public IP, not it's private one.
