Can't See WinXP Files from RH9

Hello,

I am new to linux and networking but wanted to learn linux, So I set up a very small network between my WinXP pro box and linux-RH9 with a KDE desktop via a cross over cable.

My problem is that I can see the the share dir on the winXP from linux bet I am unable to access or see any files that are in those dir-- and I get no error messages.
If I turn that around -- accessing linux file shares from winXP -- it all works; opening/saving/copying etc.

I review all sorts of documentation from various wed site including the samba site, still no luck.

I have also been trying to get SWAT up but no luck.

my network is set up this way:
WinXP static IP 192.168.18.3, no win server
linux-RH9 static IP 192.168.18.4 samba as win server

workgroup: mshome
domain: none.

pinging work from both winXP and linux,
smb is up and running
No firewall on linux -- I not sure about WinXP, although it says that its off on the local network (I even turned it off -- still nothing)

I can however access the net from linux via the winXP box (my modem is connect to the winXP box)

any suggestion ?

Have you tried accessing the Windows XP machine from Windows clients? This sounds like a Windows problem, not a Linux one.

No I haven't because I only have two machines a winXP and linux RH9.

when I first started I was able to access the WinXP from linux but then I changed the desktop from GOME to KDE and it all stopped -- after fiddling with it I was able to get winXP to linux. I try going back to GOME but still no luck.

If your right where can I go to post the question (I don't think Windows will help)
