Exclamation can't startx when telnet from remote machine

hihi, i've setup telnet sever, and i was trying to access my desktop from work (we use w2k here, but i don't think that matters)

here's what i got when i type startx:

Using authority file /home/allen/.Xauthority
writing authority file /home/allen/.Xauthority
Using authority file /home/allen/.Xauthority
writing authority file /home/allen/.Xauthority

Authentication failed - cannot start X server.
Perhaps you do not have console ownership?
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Invald MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key
giving up.
xinit: unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process <errno 3>: Server error.
Couldnt get a file descriptor referring to the console

so i thought it has to do with display 0 problem, so i did:

startx -- :1

same error shows, so... it complain console ownership right? let me try root:

Using authority file /root/.Xauthority
writing authority file /root/.Xauthority
Using authority file /root/.Xauthority
writing authority file /root/.Xauthority

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.XO-lock
and start again.

When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send
the full server output, not just the last messages.

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Invald MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key
giving up.
xinit: unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process <errno 3>: Server error.

ok. maybe this time really display problem, try this in root: startx --:1

hum.... same errors.

this is my first time setup remote network, so please easy on me heheh

p.s: my linux box has kde running (diff user name) while i'm trying to startx from my work computer. and yes, i use another diff acct name just to avoid confusion. if that may effect part of the solution.

thank you

Does your work computer use an x-server. The X Server is the program that runs on your remote computer. If you are using windows at work, It doesn't run an x-server. If you are using linux at work, it may be safer to be running an ssh server at home. Someone could sniff out your passwords if you connect to your home computer using the internet. Using ssh you can connect to your home computer and run an application there. If you are running linux at work, an x application will be displayed on the remote computer were you are working. If you are using windows, you may want to use a screen session type of program that operates like pcAnywhere, but has versions for both linux and windows.

How do you propose to display an Xwindows-based application on Win32, through an ASCII terminal of all things... that's not going to work.

back when i was in school... we used IRIX at the lab, During vacation when i go home, i was able to "telnet" back to my school computer using my win98 laptop and issuing startx command to bring up X display on my win98 laptop. that was 4 yrs ago...

and now i'd like to be able to do the same thing. i dont think things can be done in IRIX can't be done in linux

dude....you cannot open up a linux x-session under windows...period.
You can download cygwin though...install some base distro on it and then run a X session on it.
and as stated above....use SSH....it is the best deal out there...much better than telnet.
