can't send packet: network is unreachable

I have been doing massive work in trying to get my knoppix hd install to work but it just won't work.
First, managed to get the tun/tap working...somehow. Got my eth0 up. And even better, the same session I could even make a connection to the vpn server, at least when 'vpnc' it connected ok and said vpnc running in the background. Only: not able to go on the internet. And when doing a 'vpnc-disconnect' it told me there was no connection?
After rebooting my eth0 keeps up ok and doing a ifconfig shows my eth0 with a 172.x.x.x address but I'm not even able to ping my gateway anymore. It says can't send packet: network is unreachable.
I have no clue what is wrong and why it won't work. I think I tried everyting and every option.

can you run
route
??
If it's long long long response
route -n
will be faster...
Probably getway has been reset... Did you try to restart whole network??
/etc/init.d/network restart

I've managed to get to the second stage again, being able to ping etc. I tried the route command and its output is as follows:

kernel Ip routing table

Dest
172.X.X.X
default

gateway
*
172.X.X.X

Genmask
255.255.255.0
0.0.0.0

flags
u
ug

metric
0
0

useuiface
eth0
eth0

The ifconfig shows I have a nice 157.x.x.x ip adress and a tun0 with ip etc. The only thing that doesn't work is working with the browser or pinging eg google.

When I do 'vpnc-disconnect' it reports that there was no vpn connection running although everything is fine when I connect, getting the message that vpnc is running in the background. When I reconnect I get the message: binding to port 500: already in use. So there must be something running?

Thanks for the help.

ps: the restart network command is not available.

So this is magic !! Seeing your routes yous should not be able to ping anything else than 172.XXX.XXX... And if your tap ip is 154.XXX.XXX.XXX...

Well I dont know this VPN but I know the hard part to get usaly are the routes...

Good luck!
