Can't seem to dynamically assign my ethernet card using DHCP client daemon
Hi,
I'm a novice when it comes to networking in Linux. I recently installed SUSE 8.0 Pro on my laptop and I have been trying to connect to the internet (via an ethernet cable modem). I opted to use the DHCP client daemon since that's what most of the books recommended. I manage to successfully configure my ethernet card as eth0. But typing the command "rcnetwork start" gives the message "eth0 (DHCP).........no IP address yet..................backgrounding". I have tried setting my ethernet IP address statically and that doesn't give any error messages but I can't connect to the internet. I have run out of ideas and would appreciate any suggestions. By the way; is there a specific protocol to follow when trying to connect to the internet. Distribution used: SUSE 8.0 Pro System: Dual Boot, Windows XP and SUSE ifcfg-eth0: BOOTPROTO="dhcp" STARTMODE="onboot" UNIQUE="mnDB.wx55IqjLyO0 (What's this parameter) BROADCAST="193.141.17.202 NETMASK="255.255.255.0" NETWORK="193.141.17.0" Installed: DHCP Tools A DHCP Client Daemon Typing in "ifstatus eth0" gives: dhcpcd running eth0 not up Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |
Try this... Mind you I am about as new to this all as my 2 year old sister.
Turn off everything. Your computer and modem everything related to your internet connection, etc.. Then power up and see if that solves it. |
