Can't read my Windoze shares

Hi, I'm trying to get my linuxbox to read shared files on my XP box.

Samba is up and running. I've (I think) set the smb.conf file up all right. Testparm seems to think so. In fact a couple of months ago I could run it just fine in KDE but now that I'm using Gnome I've run into the following problem:

Whenever I try to get into the XP box using Nautilus with the line smb://xp's.ip.address , an "Authentication Required" box pops up asking for username and password. I've tried to use my username and logon, root and rootlogon but nothing gets me past this point. I didn't set user or password names for samba and don't have them on my XP box either.

I'm stumped.

I've been through the forums and googled around like crazy but can't find a solution here. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Okey dokey....

I've figured out my 'Authentication Required' problem by using nmblookup and some educated guesses. But now althought I can see the files I can't open them as I get permission denied, even as root.

Normally I would go into a terminal and su then chmod, set the wanted permissions and forget about it. Not so easy here as smb:///***** isn't a file or directory.

How do I set this up to get access to my windoze shares?
