Can't get vsftpd working

I am trying to get vsftp working on my Fedora Core 4 system with the 2.6.11 kernel installed.

The only change I've made so far to vsftp.conf is to disable anonymous logins.

I've opened ports 20-21 of the firewall.

Then I run /sbin/service vsftpd start

But nothing happens when I try to login remotely, either via my WLAN or from a remote system. ncftp eventually times out after numerous attempts.

Am I missing something?

Does it show up when you type ps -Af | grep vsftpd?
Try disabling your firewall while you test.
Try portscanning your ftp server if the above is true but you still cannot connect.
Do you have SE linux enabled?
