Can't get to the internet through cable modem/router

Hello

I am new to Linux and having trouble getting on the internet through a Linksys WRT54G router. I have a Dell Laptop on a docking station, running to the router via Cat 5 cable. I am running Suse 8.2 and KDE 3.1

I can ping the router and my wife's computer and get a "sent/recieved" message back. I can open the router IP page and see that I am "logged on" to the thing, but if I type an internet address I get a message that the page cannot be found. Same for email. I just don't seem to be getting out.

I have been to the LISa page and although I find the instructions a bit cryptic for my level of computer skill, I think I have installed everything correctly. If I type "/etc/init.d/lisa restart" I can see the daemon close and then reopen. If I type "whereis lisa"see it in about 3-4 different directories. If I go to the run level editor it shows Lisa running. I have been through the "setup Lisa" area in the Control Center several times folling the way suggested and also trying to set it manually.

What to try next? I have spent quite a bit of time on this and can't seem to get it without some help. So any and all help is appreciated.

Myron Lind

PS: some sort of encryption (for email?) was installed along with all the other Suse stuff. I get a message about it each time I start the computer, but haven't spent time to set that up. Could this be hanging me up on the whole internet?

Can you browse WWW using IP addresses? For example, LQ address is 64.179.4.146.

check your gateway and dns configurations. i didnt use suse b4.
i dont know where the config files are placed in Suse linux.

u may type

route -n

to see routing table. check it if your default gateway s your router.

dns config file is "/etc/resolve.conf" in redhat and most of distors.
i hope it s same for suse. if this file exist, there must be line like "nameserver=1.2.3.4"
change the ip to your ISP's DNS server.

I'm having hte exact same problem as the user above. I can ping out via my router but cannot get a DNS resolve. I set my DNS IPs to the ones that my windows computers are using and it didn't do the trick, something I left out? Thanks in advance.
