I am running Mandrake 10.1 and Resin 3.0. I can hit the server from the machine it is running on but the other machine on my LAN (Windows XP) times out when I hit the same URL. I have tried messing with firewall settings and even turning off the firewall (shorewall 2.0) to see if that was the problem but still no luck.

I also have problems with samba and ping when the firewall is on even though I've set rules to allow them.

I do not get anything is the web access log so it appears to be a networking issue but I'm new to linux and don't know what to try next. I am starting to pull out hair, please help.

Could be a problem in the configuration of httpd. Make sure it is listening on port 80 in the config file. If you do not have name resolution on the system then address the server using it's ip address i.e. for example http://192.168.0.1

what´s in ur /httpd/access.log?

The server is configured to listen on port 8080. So when i make a request I put http://192.168.1.100:8080. This works on the machine running the server but not on the XP machine on my LAN. But from the XP machine I can ping and use samba on the linux box.

The access log posts the requests that I make from the linux machine but when I try the XP machine it posts nothing to the access log. I don't believe the request is ever getting to the http server but I don't understand why.

One other thing. Does anyone know what the /var/lock/subsys directory is for? There is a blank httpd file in there.

Is this situation with the firewall disabled?

Yes, this is with the firewall disabled. I also added a rule to the firewall to allow port 8080 requests. But whether it is on or not it doesn't work. I suspect this is a networking issue with the linux box but I can't figure out what it is.

Another note. I installed Resin 3.0 on the XP box and I can make requests to it from the linux box no problem.

If the network was the problem then you wouldn't be able to use samba so there must be something wrong with the httpd

When you say httpd do you mean Resin or is there something else I should be looking at? I walked through the Resin installation and configuration twice. I can get Resin to respond when the request is from the linux machine, just not from the XP machine on the LAN.

Another note here. I just did a netstat -ta (digging deeper into networking). I do not see my http server listening. I do see my samba server. Should I see the http server here? If so how so I get it to "register"?

yes, normally u shoud see the http-daemon!
I don´t know the Resin-config (I´m sorry...is it a webserver?), but perhaps there´s an entry which restricts the access by IP-range or something similar?!
