Can't get linux box to see anything on the LAN
 

Virtually a complete linux n00b here.

I have a home lan of currently 4 machines. 3 are Winblows and one is linux. My window machines can see each other juuuuust fine, but can't see my linux box. My linux box can see anything on the lan. I have butchered so many config files on my linux box trying to set this up and i'm quite frankly more than lost. I've read just about everything I can about Samba etc, however it hasn't fixed my problem.

I can get to the internet with the linux box just fine. I connect to the internet via a cable modem, then to a basic hub which i connect all my machines to.

Like i say, my linux box can see the net just fine so i know the nic works.

I'm using Mandrake 8.2. I'll be more than happy to immediately copy/ past some files for yall to look at and help me diagnose my problem. I can get them to you immediately. Thanx VERY much for the help. I know i haven't given all the information ya need, so please fire away and i'll get ya what you do. Thanx!!

Can you ping the M$ boxes from Linux?
Can the Linux Box ping the M$ boxes?
In both cases by ip address and hostname?
Are you using DHCP? If so which one is the DHCP server?
Can you telnet/ssh into the Linux box?

It is just a question of samba not working?

I can ping the public IP adress of each, however I cannot ping the local adress of the linux box from any of the windows boxes.

From the linux box, I can ping the public IP adress but I honestly don't even know how to find the local adress for my windows boxes so I couldn't tell ya.

If i edit the lmhosts file for windows and place the linux box name to the public IP I can ping it, but not the local address.

I'm only using DHCP to access the internet.

and I haven't tried to telnet/ ssh into the linux box yet-- haven't set any hosts up.

Samba is *running* however I don't know if its *working*.

Basically anything local is not working with the linux box, but everything public is. i.e. network neighborhood on the windows boxes pics up all my lan boxes but linux. When I try to 'find computer' (linux box) by IP or name it says it cannot find it.

But you cann't ping 192.168.1.10 from the windows box correct? When you say public ip, do you mean visable to the
world? or just to the LAN? 192.168.1.x is not a public IP?

You windows box is your connection to the internet? Are using windows modem sharing?

By public IP, i mean the IP assigned to my computer via my ISP. The visible world IP.

Nope, they all pull public IPs seperately from my ISP via DHCP. I do not use any type of internet connection sharing.

I pull up LinNeighborhood and when I search, I can see my linux box but nothing else.

Try to look in your etc directory for a file called inetd.conf this file blocks alot of things to get at your box like ftp telnet etc. There are alot of files in there that do alot of blocking, also add your hosts the <MS> machines in your hosts.allow file. Good Luck

What is your network setup then? I thought you had one machine with 2 NICs connected to the internet and to your LAN and all windows machines only had local adresses.
Please explain how everything is connected.

To find your IP on windows:
for NT/2K/XP call up the CLI and type:
ipconfig /all
for Win9X go to Run and type:
winipcfg
lynch
