can't get boxes back on Samba

Half of the lab was reghosted and since then I cannot put them back on. I even took one of non-ghosted boxes and took it off the domain and tried to reapply it--but it failed. The boxes are W2k clients.

I deleted the existing unix accounts and samba accounts on the PDC and then redid them. But that didn't help.

I keep getting the error "an error occured while trying to join the domain. unknown username or password." This happened when I put in root along with my root passwd.

the Log file says
/var/log/samba/r1c3.log

smbd/reply.c:reply_sesssetup_and_X(1001)
Rejected user 'root': authentication failed

I'm stumped and thanks for all of your help.
