What madwifi version did you try to install? What errors occured? It's a fact that the ath5 driver works from 2.6.28 onwards without issue - what kind of kernel are you using? If the server is running Ubuntu 8.04, you're probably using an older kernel (nothing wrong with that). Compiling the latest 0.10.x snapshot of madwifi will help in this case (I'm running this version successfully on different machines). Get it here (it's the one at the bottom of the list, ususally).

Do (from within the directory you downloaded and unpacked the madwifi package to)
Code:
$ sudo modprobe -r ath_pci
$ sudo make clean
$ sudo make
$ sudo make install
$ sudo modprobe -i ath_pci
This works on every kernel for 8.04 I've tried it on. If you're using 9.04, you shouldn't have any problem at all (but you know that already).

well, i run ubuntu server 9.04...and i installed madwifi 0.9.4
one error was something about a module couldn't install...(during the "make" process)

it was asking about the kernel path...dont know exactly....

the other thing was saying something about noise floor calibration (cant remember exactly what was the message..)

anyway,the fact is that i use the latest ubuntu server and all the updates...

i'll give it one more try,and i'll be back...if anyone got any ideas,please tell me !

thanks!

If you want support for the Atheros chipset you mentionned, you will have to use the 0.10.x branch - the 0.9.4 doesn't support it; it's the one that came with Hardy, and it didn't (and doesn't) work!

I'm a bit surprised, however - there is no real reason why the 9.04 server edition's kernel shouldn't give you access to all drivers the desktop edition comes with... But I never used a server edition to that extend, so I may miss something here...
