can't DHCP, i think due to ioctl's busy(?). sis900 NIC, linksys router, 2.4 kernel

My problem is that I can't DHCP running a fresh install of Slackware 10.2, I dual boot with Windows XP and I get a lease from the router just fine there. I have a linksys router, and a sis900 ethernet card, and I'm running a 2.4 kernel. I've captured the debug log from DHCPCD, and it looks like this...

Feb 11 13:55:05 slack dhcpcd[2606]: dhcpStart: ioctl SIOCSIFFLAGS: Device or resource busy

When I shutdown, there's a message that looks like this...

**** /sbin/dhcpcd: not running

The meaning of this one is obvious, it just isn't running, but what I don't know is why is it not running? And why do I get the ioctl error that's busy? I'm guessing that means that eth0 is busy, but busy doing what?

Any help is, as always, much appreciated. I just don't know what to do about this error, and I really want to be able to use Slack more than windows, I've done linux on other machines (on this same network, with the same DHCP settings), and I know a fair enough bit, but this one's really got me. Thanks.

check your BIOS, make sure the setting "PNP OS" is set to "No"...
