I have an Alcatel SpeedTouch 510 Ethernet modem that I use with Windows. I installed Mandrake 9.1, hoping that it would recognize and configure my connection well, since I was using an Ethernet modem and not a USB.
After installation, the system starts up, and these two messages appear:
Bringing up interface eth0....... OK
Bringing up interface eth1....... OK
I rejoiced, thinking that my Internet connection had been set up correctly, but when I fired up Mozilla and tried to surf, it said something like "The connection attempt was refused".
So I fired up drakconnect, let it auto-detect my connection, and then clicked Next. It showed: "Your modem isn't supported by the system. Take a look at http://www.linmodems.org"
This is the first time I've ever tried to use Linux with this modem, and I am a vanilla newbie at Linux itself, so I'm at a loss at what to do. As I'm not trying to connect with a USB, the Ethernet modem shouldn't be too hard to get working. Also, I'm not convinced that the Alcatel SpeedTouch 510 Ethernet modem is unsupported by Mandrake 9.1, as drakconnect says.
I'd really appreciate it if anyone could help me out on this one.
I did a freash install of 9.2 and it worked straigt away.
Also if anyone else has a SpeedTouch 510 can they e-mail me and help me out on howto make a web server and how to forward ports.
I want to lean allot about Linux my school has like a tiny linux lab and i am like the only one that know a little bit about it so any help would be hot.
Ken Ju-On,
is your ST 510 set as a router or a bridge? if it is a router, then you only have to set your network card as DHCP (the router assigns the IP address). you can also copy your IP and subnet settings from whinedows if your NIC needs a specific IP and subnet.
if your ST 510 is a bridge, there is a utility in Mandrake that connects using PPPoE (i can't remember the name of the utility).
drakconnect is telling you to go to http://www.linmodems.org because it thinks you are trying to configure your 56k modem. i think there is an option that asks if you are configuring eth or 56k when you open drakconnect.
i can't remember the exact names of the utilities or the menu as my PC is at home and what i am using now is whinedows at work.
hope this helps.
Have you tested the speed against one of the sites such as www.dslreports.com. When I do so it reports an upload speed of just 29kbps which is about as fast as a standard 56kbps modem.
Last time I did the speed test at http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest, I got expected results. I don't remember exactly, but I remember getting around 600 kbps while on a 768 kbps connection.
When I downloaded my usual stuff from usual websites, I got the expected download rates too, so I'd say it worked pretty well.
