Can't connect VNC to Windows 7 virtual machine from Linux Mint host

I am running VMWare Player 6.0.1 on a Linux Mint 15 host which is hosting a Windows 7 Ultimate virtual machine. The goal is to be able to VNC connect to this Win7 guest from around my network, however I am receiving 'connection timed out(110)' messages for all attempts to connect.

Under the VMWare Player options for this VM I have enabled the 'VNC Connections' option, on port 5900, however no VNC client can connect - I have tried RealVNC and Vinagre.

With other Linux (Ubuntu/Mint) machines I use VNC a lot and it works fine, all the machines I'm using are on the same subnet and I've opened the port 5900 on Windows firewall.

As I understand with VMWare player the VNC server is integrated so it's not necessary to install it separately, so then what's going wrong?

VNC uses ports in range 5900. If you started vncserver with a display specification then the port is relative to that.

So if you ran "vncserver :52" to start your vncserver the actual port it is listening on is 5952 not 5900 and you'd have to open that 5952 in the firewall.

Sadly VNC was started on port 5900 and everything was done with that port, and still no joy. Downloading and installing the free VNC server into the virtual machine has fixed things, it seems the VNC server that should come with VMWare Player is not working correctly.
