can't connect to internet

i have redhat 9.0. im using a pc with an athlon processor and nvidia chipsets. i finally got the system to see my ethernet device, by turning off plug and play BIOS, and load it properly on boot. however, i cannot connect to the internet, use gaim, etc... i have disabled my firewall and security settings. i am behind a d-link router, and have tried bypassing the router, connecting directly to my cable modem. i set up a new device with the IP etc for the computer connected to the modem. the device activated quickly, but i was left with the same problem. what do i need to do to connect to the internet and such?

you need to set an ip address, default route, and dns

example:

Code:
ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.2

route add default gw 192.168.0.1

echo "nameserver 68.63.0.5" > /etc/resolv.conf
echo "nameserver 68.63.0.6" >> /etc/resolv.conf
or use dhcp

disregard that last post unless this appears to be an issue, i am posting from redhat now. the internet seems to be choppy, is that caused by using dhcp? im not very familiar with the difference.

Yes, dhcp is used to setup all the things I mentioned automatically.
