can't connect to anything

Running RH8 on a Dell poweredge server.
Went away for the summer, and when I got back networking doesn't work at all. no one was here during the summer to see what might have changed it.

Can't surf the net. Can't connect to intranet webpages.
try telnet localhost, connection refused.
try SSH from another machine, connection refused.

From the network config gui shows that the ethernet card is inactive, try to activate, and pops up a warning saying it can't activate eth0

/var/log/secure shows this:
Oct 21 10:50:55 mathserver xinetd[610]: START: sgi_fam pid:25694
from=<no address>
Oct 21 11:06:00 mathserver sshd[595]: Received signal 15; terminating
Oct 21 11:08:49 mathserver sshd[595]: Server listening on 0.0.0.0 port 22

I am unsure where to look for the problem, or what it might be.
Thanks for helping a newbie.

How about posting the output of "ifconfig -a" or "ip addr".

This would give us a clue as to what interfaces you have and whether or not they are configured correctly.

Sincerely

Looks like you have two ethernet interfaces: eth0 and eth1, but neither is "UP" and neither has an IP address. Are the IP addresses supposed to be set statically or dynamically (with DHCP)?

You need to set this up in the network config GUI. It is probably dynamic, so you need to tell the network config GUI to use DHCP. I'm not a Redhat guru, so maybe someone else can jump in here.

Also, you have TWO ethernet interfaces. Do you know which one you are using? Or is this a gateway/router for an internal subnet (on one interface) providing access to the internet (via the other interface)?

Sincerely
Bill Jennings

Sorry, I've been away, but thank you for the responses!

They are supposed to be set dynamically.
I've checked, and this seems to be set correctly.
For giggles, I changed it to static, and put in the IP address that the help desk said our card was registered under. Still didn't work but now when I try to say, surf the net, it tries to resolve the host and sits there for awhile attempting, when before it would immediately give an error saying host not found.

yes, the server has two ethernet cards installed, and we are using only one of them : eth0
eth1 has never been activiated, or utilized.

The trouble at first was that your NIC wasn't up.
If your server is supposed to get ip using DCHP, then with NIC set to DHCP in the GUI try to run
Code:
ifconfig eth0 up
.
If nothing more is broken then it should bring up then NIC and get an IP.

If this doesn't work then try to set it statically like you just tried. From here we will troubleshoot it.
Can you reach a webpage using IP? (try 64.179.4.149)
Can you ping your own IP?
Can you ping your gateway?

Similar Problem

I am having a similar problem and was reading this forum ...
I tried bringing up a web page with the ip address as suggested and
was sucessful ... so that leads me to believe that there is a dns issue ...
I'm running Debian Sarge and connecting via DHCP ... any hints?
