Can't access network or internet!

Just set up SuSE 8.0. I see not hardware conflicts and have tried 2 different ethernet cards. Currently running with a D-Link router and card. Both show that there is a connection. In the control center I can see the card is installed. DHCP is enabled to automatically assign ip address.

It seems to me that there must be something real simple that I am missing, but can't figure it out. I am well versed in Windows, but very new to Linux.

When I enter a web page in Mozilla it tells me the web page cann not be found. There are no network errors showing and I am out of ideas.

Any help would be really appreciated.

If you type (as root)
Code:
ifconfig -a
into a terminal (konsole etc.) what is the result ? Also, are you able to 'ping' any ip addresses ? It could simply be a DNS issue.

Cheers,

you also need to check that mozilla knows the internet settings.
(firefox this is Edit-Preferences-General-Connection Settings)

ifconfig -a
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HW addr 00:40:05:36:3A:46
BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX Packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX Packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 TXQeuelen:100
RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
Interrupt:10 base address:0x1000

lo The loopback check fine. Showed 127.0.0.1 and had no errors

sit0 Link Encap:IPv6-in-IPv4
NOARP MTU:1480 Metric:1
RX Packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX Packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collision:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)

That's basically what it showed me. I have tried to ping yahoo and google and get an unknown host error.

Did a loopback ping and that ran fine. Hope this gives you come clues.

Thanks a bunch,

Ok, so it's definitely not up at the mo. Any joy if you type, as root
Code:
ifconfig eth0 up - or:
ifconfig eth0 address <ip_address> netmask <netmask_address>
I'm logged onto my Debian system at the moment, so can't check the SuSE gui configs right at the moment unfortunately.

Cheers,

mj

Well it's working now. ifconfig eht0 up did nothing.

Attempting to enter the address manually at the command prompt did not work either.

So I went into the control center and set the ip address manually there(which I had done before with no success) and removed the default domain name of "local". After that it connected.
So I was happy, but wanted to know which change fixed it. After reentering the domain name and setting the ip address to be configured by the DHCP server, it still worked. So I have no idea how it got fixed.

Thanks for the help, though.

Great to hear

It could have been any number of things, but most likely was that the 'default' domain was simply incorrect (well, obviously, you might say). When doing it via the command line, there are a number of things that need to be checked - next on the list would have been the default gateway and routing table, but that can wait till another day.

Cheers,

mj
