Unhappy Browser can't see internet

I deleted Linux from my PC 2 years ago because of this problem. Now I've waited for newer versions and better software, I'm trying Linux again and I still get the same problem.

Using RH 7.1 and kppp, I can dial into my ISP just fine. I know I'm connected because I can 'ping' from the command line. However, my browser does not know I'm connected to the internet.... the browser thinks and acts as if I'm off-line. I tried both Konqueror and Netscape, so I don't think it's the browser.

I have searched all over the internet and can't find this problem in any FAQ or help list. I can't beileve I'm unique -- this must happen to others! Anyway, if anyone can solve this then you'll prevent me from deleting Linux again and you'll prevent another copy of Windoze being sold.

Thanks for any help,
..... Old Pawn

Look at /etc/resolv.conf

There need to be ip addresses there for a couple of Domain Name Servers [DNS], usually provided by your isp [at least one]. The files permissions need to allow reading by user [root], group [root], and others [others]. Just a guess.

Couple quick things to check:

1. Can you ping a name from command prompt? i.e ping www.yahoo.com
If this DOES NOT work then you have a DNS problem.

2. Check Netscape settings. Make sure NEtscape isn't trying to use a Proxy

3. Verify network settings. This really only applies if you have a static IP. If you do then you probably want to verify your gateway and dns servers(see above) as well. If you use DHCP then run ifconfig and verify you are receiveing the necessary information.
