bridge starts on boot but dies on logoff?

i have an fc2 box running as a bridge with snort watching the bridge interface but not running as inline, just watching. when i boot up the box i have the bridge starting at boot. the box is normally accessed remotely via ssh. last night i logged on locally as root and then logged off and the bridge died. i found this out this morning and a reboot solved the problem. my question is this... why would logging off kill the bridge if the bridge is set at boot time and a reboot brings it back up even without logging in?
