I hope you did make install for both packages...
You will need to do a full kernel build with modules..

brctl:package not installed

RED HAT Enterprise LINUX WS version3

my /proc/version reads:
Linux Version 2.4.21-4.EL
RED Hat Linux 3.2.3-20

i have plced a downloaded kernel "linux-2.5.4" in /usr/src
and i have run a "make menuconfig" there.
then, i chose bridging option which falls in networking options.
then, i ran "make dep".
then i placed bridge-utils-1.0.4 in /usr/local/src and ran a "./configure" followed by "make".
but when i run brctl commands i get "package not installed" report.

Is that all you did so as to compile your new kernel ?? If it is, you missed a few steps !
With 2.6.x kernels, you're to run "make" (make dep isn't needed anymore), then "make modules_install" (in case you've compiled some modules), then boot on your new kernel (arch/i386/bzImage)...
