blocking some uneeded ports


hello , a scan of my pc gives some ports open taht i don't really need like
13 ( daytime )
9 (discard)
37 (time)
i wanna block these ports , but don't know the daemon whish is providing it can someone help me on this ?

What type of distribution do you have? If it's a newer Red Hat distro, then xinetd is what you're looking for.

The command "/etc/init.d/xinetd stop ; /sbin/chkconfig --del xinetd" will take care of those ports (and anything else started via xinetd). Or you could just firewall them off with netfilter.

this is what i did
iptables them all ( mean all uneeded ports ) and it seems to work fine , but these ports are chown as " filtred" with a syn scan ( nmap )

Yep, "filtered" is what nmap says when the computer seems up, but no ports are open. The same has hidden/blocked, so you're safe. However, I would suggest that you start with shutting unwanted services off too, just as TheOneKEA said. I think that would get it a little more safe, and also a bit faster.
