Bizarre telnet problem for specific user

Hi all,

This problem is really frustrating. We have several RedHat boxes that all play nicely in the sandbox. We are using NIS to handle user password, groups, and all that good stuff. Everything is working just fine except . . . for for user (userB) that can not telnet into any of the machines. Telnet works just fine for all the other users (not including root 'coz we know that is bad). Ssh, ftp, all work just fine for this user. UserB can log in just fine when sitting in front of any of the console or when doing a 'su' from another user's account!

Any ideas? We know telnet is dangerous, but it is the simplest way to access the Linux boxes from the PCs.

Thank you!

What happens when userB tries to telnet in? What do the auth logs show? Does userB's account differ from other user accounts in any way?

still struggling with telnet

Thank you for the suggestions. The telnet service is absolutely up and running because all other users are able to successfully use telnet to connect to the RedHat machines. The problem is just with the one user.

As for the auth logs, I confess I'm not sure which ones to look at. The secure log in /var/log just shows the telnet sessions being opened. I can't find any indicatation anywhere that the authentication process is rejecting this particular user. But, again, I'm probably not looking in the right place.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.
