Unhappy BIND: Strange

Hi ,

I have configured BIND on my RH7.2 machine and its working fine.

Now here comes the strange part.
WITHOUT DNS: Login prompt < 1 sec ( approximate)
WITH DNS: Login prompt < 10 sec ( approximate)

___________________________________________________
If i telnet to this machine it takes a whole 10 seconds to get the
login prompt( from telnet, ftp) after i configure BIND on the linux box.

I checked and confirmed IDENTD was not running.

/etc/resolv.conf contents :
nameserver <ip of my lin box>
domain mydomain.com

/etc/nsswitch.conf contents:
hosts: dns files nisplus

/etc/host.conf contents :
order bind,hosts

I did telnet on my lin box after disabling named and making appro changes to the above mentioned files and LO! i was able to get the login screen in < 1 sec!!!

No firewall present on my box.

DNS is working fine as i did nslookup and was able to resolve by host name and domain name ( yeh i removed entries from the hosts file !)

Can anyone suggest what can possibly be wrong ?

Regard,
Xanthium.

In that case

/etc/nsswitch.conf contents:
hosts: files, dns, nisplus

/etc/host.conf contents :
order hosts,bind

Are you running nisplus, if not then remove from you search.

Do you have other nameserver entries in your /etc/resolv.conf besides your IP? I would also suggest you change your IP address to 127.0.0.1. -mk

Hi mike ,

Yeh i will try to do that .... my guess is that maybe BIND is listning
on my localhost IP ie; 127.0.0.1 ...... can i make it listen on my internal LAN IP ? ( in log file it says it is listning but iam not sure )

Regards,
Xanthium.
