BIND can resolve only on the same server but not from other PCs.
I have installed Fedora 5 and want to use it as a DNS server.
After setting it up with zone files, nsswitch, etc., it seem to work properly and resolve the domains properly when I tried it doing so on the same hardware. However, when I tried using DIG or NSLOOKUP from a different machine, it would not resolve at all. I tried pinging to the DNS Server and it replied normally. Any suggestions of where to go from here is highly appreciated? |
Have you checked your firewall settings? You'll need to allow UDP traffic to port 53 on the DNS server so that your client boxes can access it.

Thanks. You help solved my problem! It was the firewall afterall.
I have an external firewall which links us to the outside world. I was testing the DNS server from within our DMZ so the thought of firewall slipped my mind. I have installed the DNS server with the its Linux firewall. |
