Big delay stablishing connections

Hi! I have Red Hat Linux 3.2.3, and since a few months, I noted the connection to it is slower and slower. I suffer it with putty, psftp, and with CuteFtp it directly can't connect (some months ago it did it without problems, and I didn't change anything).

For example: I start putty, and it last 33 seconds before showing "login:". This didn't happen before.

Once connected, the speed is normal.

I have little experience with Linux, perhaps there is some log files that are growing without supervision, I don't know where to look.

Regards,
SB.

Are you on the same network ? Do you connect using a machine name or an ip ? If you use a name, is it the same problem when your use an IP directly ?

Singing Banzo 07-15-2006 09:57 AM

Yes, I'm on the same network.
I was using machine name, but with the IP it's the same. :(

zeitounator 07-15-2006 10:08 AM

I was thinking of a name resolution issue but it is apprently not the case...

Maybe you could try to connect in debugging mode from an other linux host if possible. That might help you investigate the problem:
Code:

ssh -vvv user@host

Ok, I did the test, see the 2 steps with big delays:

zeitounator? anyone?

Why can these steps last 25 sec each?:

debug1: identity file /root/.ssh/id_dsa type -1
debug2: we sent a publickey packet, wait for reply

One of the reasons to stay current on your version is for support. Is there a specific reason you are running such an old version of red hat? I think the current version is 9 (?). If cost is the issue Fedora (free version of redhat) is on version 5 (FC5 is roughly redhat 9.5).

lazlow:

It's not that old, is the Enterprise version, and it's the current version (Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES v.3) (perhaps there is just some subversion not updated).

lazlow 07-18-2006 05:25 PM

v3 came out in sept 03, v4 came out in feb 04 and v05 should be out shortly.

http://www.redhat.com/rhel/details/limits/

Three years old is ancient at the rate of current development. If I understand the website correctly you can update to v4 for free. Just moving from the 2.4.x kernel to the 2.6 will be a huge jump.

Guess what, since a few days it's working ok, it last about 4 seconds, without any change done. (?)

Thank you for the attention, and I'll consider upgrading.
